I'm going to be checking out/touring a prospective gym this week... and aside from looking out for cleanliness and pricing tricks, I have no clue what I should be looking for when I tour the gym.

For those of you with gym memberships what do you wish you would have known or asked about prior to joining?

The main thing is: Do you require a contract?
Be careful, many of these big gyms now require a yearly or milti-yearly contract. If you sign you are locked in to payment. If you quit for any reason (even health like broken bones) you will still pay your monthly or yearly fees. You can not get out of the contract.
I have always gone to gyms and I would never sign one. You never know if you will move or get hurt or not like the place. They go after your wages and can ruin your credit too.

Find a gym with no contract or month to month only. Nothing long term. Find out if classes cost more (like yoga or?) are towels or lockers extra. Even ask what all the extras are?

Also please go to the gym 4 or 5 times during the time of the day your will attend and see how many cars our in the parking lot or go inside and see what kind of people you will be working out with. Sometimes it is seniors, young people, or nasty looking people who go there to groom as they live in their cars (yes I have witnessed this). The busiest times of the day are very early morning and after work and weekends. See how crowded it is.
THE WORST PROBLEMS WITH GYMS IS THEY CONTINUE TO SELL MEMBERSHIPS EVEN WHEN THEY ARE OVERCROWDED. Then it is busy and you have to wait for using the equipment, now good. They keep selling based on the rate of loss (rate people quit or do not use their memberships) This can cause an overcrowded gym. The best gym stops selling memberships at a predetermined number.

I wish I had known that I was going to waste my money on a gym. I wish I would have known that I would get in better shape, faster by working out at home doing body weight exercises and walking 40 minutes a day.

Now if you really have to have a gym, then my best suggestion is a gymnastics gym. You can climb ropes, workout on nice mats doing body weight exercises, etc. Just watch how gymnasts move and you will learn how to get in shape, and the best shape of your life.

Hours of operation, as I keep a weird schedule and sometimes like to work out very early or very late..
Cancellation policy, if I change my mind/move, whatever.

well maintained equipment, clean washrooms r my priority. Bear in mind, many people can b very sweaty and some of the equipment handles n seats, if unchanged for many months, really stink and very unhygenic. I told the manager who promised to do something about it but ..... well ?! sigh ....
