Im 14 and a freshman in Highschool. I have 5 minute passing periods but are school is very packed and everything moves slow. So when I got to 7th hour my teacher said if you want something from me you have to do something for me. You have to do 10 pushups. So i didnt get to go to the bathroom because i refused to do the pushups even though girls only have to do upright pushups against a table. Anyway i live in the illinois district of education and i was wandering if this was illegal?

This does not sound like an ethical teaching practice unless you are in a military school. If you constantly ask to use the restroom, they may have reason to suspect you of misuse of the restroom breaks. But I do not believe that teacher made a good decision in handling it. Many people ocassionally have problems with their bowls or bladders (especially after eating school lunch) I would not want be forced to do pushups under any of these circumstances. Talk with your parents, school couselor or student advocate. Sometimes, people don't know what's going on until you bring it to their attention. Teachers make mistakes, too. This one crossed the line.

i would report the incident to your parents, and have them report it to the principal.

in a way I can see the teachers point - if you really have to go bad enough that you are willing to do something to "earn" it, then you probably really needed to use the restroom. if not, then maybe you were just looking for an excuse to get out of class.

I had a third period class I was always late too because my previous class was a LONG way away, and pretty much everyday I'd stop to use the restroom on the way - and my teacher finally made me a deal...if I'd go to class, drop off my books and then go to the rest room he wouldnt count me tardy even though I got back to class after the bell because of the rest room visit.

You may be able to work something like that.

Good Luck.

They have to let you use the bathroom. If you are going alot and it is disrupting the class then they can notify your parents and tell them to either take you to the doctors to see why you go so much.If there is no medical proof that you need to go so much then the teacher can cut your bathroom use out but not completely. To make you do pushups just to use the bathroom is crazy.Tell your parents. As far as if it`s illegal,no it`s not.

Wow, if you were my 13 year old I would be in the school making a huge complaint. As far as I know I didn't think the educators could withhold going to the restroom. Talk to your parents. If this isn't an option speak to your school counselor. I feel this to be unfair to force you to do physical exercise in order to use a restroom. I would definitely talk to some other adult.

Is it legal ? I highly doubt it. But i cant say for sure. However, that is one need that all humans have in commen. So it is definitely a right. Sounds like your teacher has a power trip. Is she young? If you need to go, i say go. If disciplinary action is taken go to the district superintendent. Iam 26 and have two sons and a daughter. I told them that they have a right to use the restroom. But not to abuse it. I pitty the teacher that would deny them their natural bodily functions.
