95% of the US women in Vietnam served in medical capacities in major hospitals. It was too dangerous for them away from the rear, not only from a war point of view, but because the US soldiers presented danger cause they were so horny. I'm not kidding. I served in a MASH Unit, and we had male nurses, not like the Korean MASH units as portrayed in the movie and TV show.

The mostly served in support roles, since women were banned from combat service back then. Their most famous role was as nurses in Vietnam MASH units or on the Hospital Ships. A TV series called "China Beach" ran on ABC from April 26, 1988 to July 22, 1991. The series was set at the 510th Evacuation Hospital and R&R (the "Five-and-Dime" Rest & Recreation Center). This series made Dana Delany's career. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_Beach
