They didn't really at first. The YJ is a CJ with wider stiffer springs, a different grill and hood and stronger frame. That's it. All this gave it a slightly smoother ride, releived some of the rollover issues and modernised the design for the approaching decade (new younger generation ).
The only differences astethetically were the front end (yes, the rectangular head lights) and a new dash.

The TJ is a completly different beast altogether. Chrysler told the designers that it only has to look like a jeep but nothing else. At first the only thing they kept were the engines now even they are gone for 2007. And for the first time in the Jeeps history (CJ's, YJ, TJ), they come in TWO WHEEL DRIVE with 4 wheel drive as an OPTION!

But to answer your question, it just boils down to younger generations don't want to drive their parents cars. They want flashy and different, so all car manufactures refresh their lines every 8 to 10 years or so. Sometimes good, sometimes bad.

The CJ, an entirely different vehicle than the YJ, was narrow and viewed as a liablity risk by Jeep. The chassis was also obsolete and unrefined compared to tyhe YJ, better ride. The CJ is however still considered to be the bettter off road vehicle.

CJ was the Civilian Jeep version of the 1945 Willy's military jeep. Chrysler bought out the American Motors phasing out the Civilian Jeep (CJ) line in favor of the Wagoneer and the Cherokee in 1987, It seems to have made a brief re-appearance in the mid nineties.

YJ Wrangler replaced the CJ7. Same idea, short wheelbase Jeep that is good offroad. Wranglers are the "descendants" of the CJ's.

The main reason behind ending production of the "CJ" was $$$ just like any other car maker. Chrysler wanted to bring the design up to date and attract a newer-younger crowd thus increasing sales and profitability.

It's as simple as one word, EVOLUTION!
The first generation of Wranglers, 1987, used the same engine than the CJ7, almost the same front axle, only diffrence is the position of the pumkin CJ was passenger side Tj is drivers side.
Rear axle is lighter in the TJ. Major differences reside in tranny and transfer.

They were dagerous and rolled over more easily due to their narrow width. Chrysler did not want any more law suits.
