as a General rule.. the further you go Uptown from 110 St it starts go get bad, Maybe 100th on the East Side (east of 5th Ave).
But even way uptown, in Manhattan it gets Very Expensive.

For places Try Craigs List

OK anyone that obviously said there are ghettos or unsafe places has never lived or known anyone who has lived in Manhattan in the last 10 years.....Let me explain.....Manhattan has completly changed in the last 20 years Real Estate is through the roof even in the previously though of unsafe places....Harlem, lower East side.....etc The cost of buying a 600 sq ft one bedroom apt in a co-op in the lower east side lets say will run approx 200,000+ yes that is for a 1 bedroom.....rent for a 400 sq ft apt in the village would be anywhere from 700-1000 / mth....do U know how small 400 sq ft is?....U can get better deals ithe further uptown U go for example the upper west side (high real estate area) is just a few blocks south of Harlem.......My point is this ...on the actual island of manhattan real estate is obscene even in the previously branded bad hoods...and to live there U need to have some cheddar.....U are dealing with several million people jammed into a couple thousand acres....there is always people on the streets at all hours and the only time U should feel unsafe is when U do something stupid....like going through Central Park alone at night.....or taking the subway at a odd hour at a small station in the middle of the night alone......U just need to use your brain and U will be safe....Depending on where U are coming from Urban living is different and takes a while to adjust to....especially in a city as big as NYC..

If you are a young graduate I suggest the upper east side.....and to find a roomate.....that area is flooded with recent college grads and tons of 20something bars no joke.....Rent for 2 bedroom 1,000+ sq feet approx 2,200+ If U deal w/ a real estate agent to find an apartment tell them zone 11 they will know what U mean....Its a great city...and I suggest everyone experiences living in it even if it is for a year or two.....it will culturalize U purley by osmosis....have fun...but be careful fun is like crack when U are living in a large City like this ......there is so much of it and it can completly consume U ....making U lose focus on your career....goals.....etc....I left there after living there for my first 26 years.....I am now in fun recovery......trying to get back to center.....anyway....enjoy

The best thing for you to do, is check out the areas and diff bouroughs and see where you feel comfortable. If you use an agent, they are not allowed to answer that question. But, be prepared to shell out alot of cash to live on Manhatten.

If you aren't comfortable living in small quarters for large $$, look across the river to Northern NJ/ lots of people commute in--from cities in NJ-via ferry, train or bus. Hoboken is really nice-very yuppy (some call it a small version of NYC). The further out you go, the lower the cost and more space you can find.

Craigs list is a great tool to find places, but you have to act quick!

The LAX section is slightly not basic besides. i might want to hardly call it "ghetto", yet there are truly some human beings passing by ability of low priced inns and man or woman video arcades. you are able to stay in West Hollywood or Studio city, yet you're particular to pay a lot extra. so a concepts as ghettos, Compton is doubtless one in each and every of the least of your concerns. South l. a. is traditionally undesirable besides as Koreatown, the South Bay (Torrance pretty), Hollywood (maximum elements, with all else overrun by technique of travelers). believe me, this is unlike you're going to all of unexpected wander right into a foul section. this is exceptionally glaring once you have become everywhere close to at least one.

try going to craigslist.org...or craigslist.com, im not sure which one. at any rate, you can search for apartments within all areas of NYC. honestly, grammercy park is a really nice area, safe, by the trains but super duper loud. i have lived in nyc for 4 years and have lived in astoria, queens for 2. i love it! next to the trains, quiet hood and nothing but fun and exciting times all around. if you feel you want to live in the city, be prepared to either share a mad exspensive place to live in a super duper small space...depending on your exspneses.

Manhattan actually has very few "bad" areas anymore in the age of gentrification.

Anywhere in Mahattan is going to be expensive, though.
