there's this cat that wanders into our property a lot, but i know that he is owned by some neighbors down the street. anyways he approached me today for the first time, being very friendly and wrapping his tail around my leg, purring. i bent down to pet him and he immediately jumped in my lap. after a few minutes of petting him he suddenly turned around, bit my wrist (no not hard, he didn't draw blood) hissed at me and wandered off. My best guess is that i hit a sensitive spot accidentaly, but any other ideas to this contradictory behavior?

Cats that are just roaming around aren't tame.

It is always a good idea to be aware of stray cats and keep a safe distance. I'm the type of person who will pet anything that comes into my yard. Cats will naturally have an attitude. Believe me, it's not you and it will probably be back for another petting!

He did not recognize you, your scent may have changed somehow, that or you are cursed. Your cat may also being seening things. Did someone you know die recently? The cats may be sensing that person. My brother died and my cats see brother from time to time. Luckily we both had the same scent and he wore Axe Body Spray which no woman can resist and most men want to wear to smell like man. Believe it or not, the animals like that kind of smell too.

For healthy cats, this is generally normal. My seven house cats will sometimes bite me when I'm petting them, or smack at me and walk off. My vet says that because cat's skin is so sensitive, it "over stimulates" them and it's their way of telling you they have had enough. Different situation if the cat is sick though.

you over stimulated kitty, be watchful for signs next time. Try petting face and neck only. Kitty did not intend to be mean, just saying "enough"
