Well, are you talking about using a tanning bed, sunbathing or the sunless lotions?
The sunless tanning lotions are the best cause they dont damage your skin or cause premature againg. But before you use the sunless tanning lotion you should exfoliate your skin. This will help it go on evenly and wont leave streaky lines. I used Lancome.

It really depends on what type of skin you have. Fair, medium, olive, dark....some types tan better than others. No tan is a healthy one but if you must get some color on you use something with an SPF so the worst of the ultraviolet rays are filtered out. Stay out a little bit in the sun every day for a while and build a base tan. Moisturize your skin after every tanning session. Stay away from tanning beds. Tanning bed tans look fake and tend to be much too dark. I'd suggest using a tinted moisturizer like Jergens or Loreal that build a natural looking tan over several days. They're not like sunless tanners. Also use a nice bronzer on your face, shoulders and cleavage.

How To Tan Safely
The sun is meant to be enjoyed, to avail of a good suntan. Firstly, you need to acquaint yourself with the associated terms like Sun Protection Factor and Ultraviolet index.
Ultraviolet rays from the sun are absorbed by the skin, thereby producing melanin, which makes the outer skin dark in complexion. This looks like a tan but is nothing more than the skin being harmed. Ultraviolet index is a count of the number of ultraviolet rays that make it to earth. They are invisible and consist of UVA and UVB sub-types, both of which can cause havoc with your skin. This index is measured from one to 10. A higher index should warn of imminent sunburn.
Sunscreen lotions have a Skin Protection Factor, which is measured on a scale of 4-30. Dark skinned people who do not struggle to get a suntan should use one with the lowermost SPF and those with light skin should go in for highest SPF.
Sunscreen is not to be confused with sun block. Sunscreen lotions react with the rays of the sun and form a shield that protects the skin. Apply them 20 minutes before exposure to sun. Sun block creams do not have an SPF rating and they completely filter out the UV rays. It is quite messy. You can identify a sun block cream by the absence of an SPF rating.

Airbrush is the healthiest, but, if you want to go by sun, then do it around noon, don't do it when the sun is setting becasue something about the time difference...anyways, I just know that it won't work. Try laying out on a trampoline in your bikini on top of wet or damp towels with a nice soda or something. This is what me and my friend did, and it worked really well, adn we weren't even out there very long!
