My family has both from 2001 and I usually use the wrangler. I would say that for comfort the cherokee is the better choice as well as for carrying luggage or whatever else. The cherokee is still great for winter as well. The wrangler is just a fun car, your high up and you can really add the off road gear to it however its much smaller and isn't as nice for long trip or long driving daily. I would say if you plan on driving or traveling a lot get the cherokee but if you dont drive very often except maybe for a skii trip every winter or so the jeep is great fun

The cherokee is a better daily driver and has more cargo room.
the main difference is the cherokee has a unibody construction, meaning the body servers dual purpose as the body and the frame, they are tied together.
the wrangler has a body on a traditional ladder type frame.
also the cherokee has a coil 4link w/ panhardbar front suspension and rear spring over axle leafsprings.
the wrangler depending on what year you get, but the square headlight jeeps aka yj's have a leaf sprung under axle suspension front and rear, where as the later model round headlight wranglers aka tj's had a coil 4link w/panhardbar front and rear
if you were going for more offroading, id get the wrangler, if you want virsatility id get the cherokee.
also expect to have more problems with the cherokee because the wrangler is more simple. (as far as the body and chassis goes) the drive train is virtually the same.
plus expect to pay alot more for a wrangler in the same condition as a cherokee, also youll find better wrangler prices in the wintertime.

Apples and oranges... The wrangler is a sporty vehicle reminiscent of the old WW II Jeep or GP General Purpose vehicle. It was rugged and dependable but small and relatively inconvenient. The Cherokee is an early SUV, bigger more comfortable, but not really an off road vehicle. Early models got a lot of criticism in many aspects of their construction and function I test drove one in the late 80's and did not find it functional. Underpowered and boxy it was not that well built as the Chrysler corporation of that era was American and not a Damilier-Benz company yet. They built garbage, I know I bought a new 1977 Dodge Monacco that was probably put together after the Christmas party that year. I had nothing but trouble with it and it ate up $400 worth of Michelin tires in just 16,000 miles because the front end alignment could never be adjusted properly. I took it everywhere. One company refunded my $49 that I paid for life time alignment services on one car. They tried 5 times and cold not to it. They were going to bend the frame when I took the money and ran. Then I bought a new 1993 Dodge Grand Caravan I put in 5 transmissions in the first 100,000 miles. Spent $3,000 maintaining the air conditioner alone. Now I have bought a new 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan. Wow what a difference!!!

Depends on what you want it to do.
The Wrangler is pretty much a purpose built off roader. Everything else, and I mean everything, comes secondary. That includes cargo room, comfort, and gas mileage (although the Cherokee actually gets worse mileage, Wranglers get surprisingly lousy mileage for something so tiny). If your primary goal is to tackle the most difficult off road trails out there, the Wrangler is for you.
The Cherokee is a larger beastie with a lot more room inside and a bit more in the way of creature comforts. For some reason, they don't seem to have quite the same resale value as Wranglers. However, the four wheel drive ones are still very serious off road machines. Their extra size and weight makes it more difficult to get them to scamper over large rocks like a Wrangler can, but they're still capable of getting through unpaved roads, mud, and sand. The biggest thing to watch out for is to avoid any of them with the V6 - the engine to have is the 4.0 or 4.2 liter inline six.

Depends on what you wil use it for. Wranglers are loads of fun on and offroad but not real practical. Cherokees are good offroad as well but you can carry a lot more stuff in a Cherokee. Get a Wrangler if you want the "top down" experience.

If you've got cargo or more than a couple of passengers, go with the Cherokee. The Wrangler is great fun, but it's not the most practical vehicle out there with regards to hauling stuff and people around.
