I am a wedding planner (in Nebraska), so I can give you some tips on how to find a planner.
First meet with at least 5 planners (less ONLY if there is less available in your area).
Get price lists (do they charge a percentage? by the hour? have packages?)
Look closely at any paperwork that they give you, search for hidden fees, loopholes, guarantees, etc (If you have a GREAT planner they might guarantee that they can get you a savings equal to their fees or you will pay them ONLY the savings amount... its rare but some do it)
Find out if they will give you an initial consultation FREE to see if you can work with them (personalities dont always mesh)
and Get Referrals and CHECK them (I cant stress this enough... if they cannot provide you with referrals find out WHY.... are they new and inexperienced? are the previous people they worked with unhappy with their work?)
After you have found a wedding planner (or a few wedding planners) that are reputable then meet with them. Use that FREE consultation to tell them how you envision your wedding looking. Then ask them if they can make that possible on your budget (be upfront and honest because they cant be honest with you if youre holding something back or not being fully honest).
Generally the Free consultation will be limited to one hour so make the best use of it you can, and take notes or bring a mini-recorder so that you can refer back to the conversation.
I agree with zolnux, in part... You should be able to find a wedding planner that will work WITH you not take over.
This is YOUR wedding and you should be able to have it your way.... the only way that they should be interjecting their own ideas is if you asked for them to.
Congrats and Good Luck

We just hired a wedding day planner, so I can offer a LITTLE help!
1) What will they provide? If they are charging over $100/hour for their service, what is their responsibilty?
2) What is YOUR budget? Do you have time to find the vendors or do you need someone to do it for you?
3) How often are they going to meet with you? What is their schedule like? We went through a saga with a wedding planner who decided she would be hard to contact--be careful.
4) Do your research and interview at LEAST 3 different wedding planners. Be realistic and be upfront. If you can't afford the $1300 package they offer, ask them if they can give you an al-a-carte option instead.
Honestly though, wedding planners are the best. Ours was only the wedding day coordinator, but she made it possible for all of us to relax. We just had our wedding two weekends ago, and NOTHING WENT WRONG! No one stressed, no one was crazy, and we all enjoyed everything. Totally worth it.

Some one who will find what you want and give you ideas without being pushy about what you should do. Also must be willing to work with you not just for you. They need to have a few real good connections that are not in it for the money.

Well to begin with get references. See if she has pictures of previous weddings that she has planned. See if she can come up with some creative ideas on her own without asking you for suggestions. Talk to her see where her head is at . When you talk to her I mean really talk to her. good luck and god bless and congrats.

Make sure she/he is someone you like and see eye to eye with.
Nothing is worse than to have a planer who cant share your vision of what YOUR special day to be!
