Remark to a departed friend - pipe smoker? bar man? ideas?

Message to recently passed friend in card to family - should have expained this better. Friend died, and old friend wrote that in message to family. Don't think either were golfers...

It's a golf term. Put something to the 'wood' means, drive it hard.
At tee-off the ball is hit by a wood (golf club). Depending on the need, other irons are used when playing to sink the ball in the hole.

The the friend probably means, give that other person a motivation, drive him to do something because he is too lethargic or slow or the friend means 'yeah do that, and give him one for mysake too'
