Theobromine is a chemical in chocolate that is toxic to dogs because their bodies cannot metabolize it. A dog that ate chocolate is assessed by its weight vs the amount of chocolate. Then the vet gives an injection of apomorphine to make the dog vomit, if too much time has not passed from injestion time, then they fill the dog up with activated charcoal to absorb any toxin not vomitted up. Sometimes when really bad a vet may choose to keep your dog for awhile and hook them up to IV fluids. Don't let your dog have chocolate and if you think s/he got it, then call your vet. Some dogs do have a sweet tooth.

It contains Theobromine which dogs cannot digest and it causes liver failure. Type of chocolate matters. Milk chocolate is not as bad as dark chocolate and bakers chocolate (not sweet) is the worst. Size matters too. Big dogs can eat small amounts of milk and dark without problems. Little dogs have more problems with these and Bakers chocolate can kill them all with only a small amount.

Chocolate has a chemical in it called theobromine, which acts like caffeine.

It would take 20 ounces of milk chocolate to kill a 20 pound dog, but it would only take 2 ounces of baker's chocolate and 6 ounces of semi-sweet.

Bakers chocolate is extremely toxic to dogs. Regular chocolate is in large doses. It has a chemical called theobromine which is harmful to the dog. I am not sure on the amounts of each kind of chocolate a dog can have, it depends on their weight.

I found this on talktothevet.com:

We've all heard it, "Don't give your dog chocolate it will kill him". We'll how true is it you're probably wondering. Do I have to rush him to an emergency vet if he ate one of my M&M's?

The truth is chocolate contains theobromine that is toxic to dogs in sufficient quantities. This is a xanthine compound in the same family of caffeine, and theophylline.

Toxic Levels

The good news is that it takes, on average, a fairly large amount of theobromine 100-150 mg/kg to cause a toxic reaction. Although there are variables to consider like the individual sensitivity, animal size and chocolate concentration.

On average,
Milk chocolate contains 44 mg of theobromine per oz.
Semisweet chocolate contains 150mg/oz.
Baker's chocolate 390mg/oz.

Using a dose of 100 mg/kg as the toxic dose it comes out roughly as:
1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight for Milk chocolate
1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight for Semisweet chocolate
1 ounce per 9 pounds of body weight for Baker's chocolate.

It's the caffiene. Y'know how, with some people, the sugar makes them "hyper"? Well, with dogs, it makes their heart beat dangerously fast, and can send them into cardiac arrest.

However, some chocolate is more potent than others. Baking chocolate has the highest amount of caffiene, so it will be very deadly.

Cocoa bean in no shape of form, is ever a part of dog's diet in natural life. It probably won't kill them if you give very little (per body weight) but it's not good for them.

dogs can't digest chocolate and it will either make them throw up ( like ine does) or it will build up in their system over time and can kill them. even if you dog doesn't get sick it builds up and you don't even know it. It is unknown why they cannot digest it. anything chocolate unless it is made with carob. carob tastes just like chocolate, but just is digestable for them. check out web sites on treats you can make with carob or buy some in the pet store.

Dog just can't handle it. Wolves eat raw meat in the wild, if we ate raw meat then we would get sick too.
I'ts actually ok to give dogs white chocalate. But you would have to make it your self, because the kind you buy has to much sugar in it for dogs.

i used to work for a vet. it was highly recommended that you do not give dogs chocolate. i am not sure of the ingredient which can lead to death, but i do know that dark chocolate is worse than milk chocolate.
