okay...
if you are into doing many things like photo editing, music and video creation, office suite (word, excel, powerpoint, access) and having many different programs that are all compatible with each other, go with Windows.
If you are into music (iPod), photo gallery sharing, messaging, browsing the net, and a user friendly interface, then go with a Mac.
if you enjoy free open source software and have a lower budget, wish to host your own web server, and stuff like that, go with a Linux distro.
Personally, I use Windows XP at home and at my workstation for photo editing on photoshop and video creation. Hope these geneal ideas help!! :-D

The best choice is always a Mac. Apple uses superior hardware in every Macintosh. The main difference? Macs have a much better design, in my opinion. The MacBook is very durable. MagSafe will save your computer from a fall should someone trip over the power cord. There's also the Sudden Motion Sensor, which will park the hard drive's heads if the system detects a fall taking place, a feature that only Apple provides. There's also the built in iSight camera, which has a much higher resolution than the web cameras seen on PCs. The glossy wide-screen display is beautiful, to say the least. The audio hardware is great, with hybrid analog/digital/optical input/output. Let's not forget the built-in AirPort Extreme (802.11g) and Bluetooth. Now let's move on to software... It's the only notebook on the market that can run Mac OS X and Windows XP, but let's focus on Mac OS X, the most advanced operating system in the world. Don't let people tell you that Macs are less prone to viruses because it's lack of users or low market share. This isn't true. It's actually due to the Mac's UNIX underpinnings. Here's an article explaining exactly why Mac OS X is more secure than Windows XP:
http://weblog.infoworld.com/enterprisemac/archives/2006/08/is_windows_inhe.html
There's also the myth that there's a lack of software for Mac. This, again, is not true. There may be millions of calendar programs for the PC, but how many of them are worth using? Maybe two or three? Simply put, crap doesn't survive in the Mac market. Most of the software available to Mac is much better than it's PC counterpart. You can find Mac software for just about anything. There's also a lot of great open source applications, due to Mac's close relationship to other open source UNIX-based operating systems. There are many great features to talk about when it comes to Mac OS X, but it would take me forever to tell you about them. There's just so many, like built-in system-wide spellchecking, as you type. A system-wide dictionary that can be invoked in any application with a few simple key strokes. You can search your entire system instantly with Spotlight. It comes in handy when you have thousands of files to search through. The results come up as soon as you type a letter. :-) These are just a few of the thousands of great things you'll find in Mac OS X. It's crazy how many great things Mac OS X can do. Take it from me, I've been using Mac for two years and I'm still finding features that amaze me. Get a Mac, you'll love it.

Greetings!
I am a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer. In all honesty the best os is Mac, Windows Second and Linux not even close.\
As you know recently a protocol has been developed to make easier, (though it was always possible through ipx-spx) Mac, communicated with windows.
With that being said and the playing feel level in regards to being able to communicate with other machines.
The mac is less prone to attacks, ala pop ups, virus etc. The mac is more graphics friendly. I have never know anyone working in that type of media to use windows. It requires less maintenance in terms of freeze ups, reloading operating systems and the like.
Windows after 98, having pretty much the attention of business entities found ways to focus more for less. To put more money in their pocket and do less to further the existing platform for end users.
You might only think in terms of what an operating system cost, and probably have no idea that the real money is in licensure.
Just the same, They trashed nt4 a secure platform to create 2k pro and advanced data server. As though any company would build a forest on single domain of 10 million users.
You need only look at the value of their stock and compare it to the number of shares of computer they have to understand what I am saying. So don't think I am a disgruntled m-soft guy, I am not. I do network repair to the tune of 45 per hour and security at 75.
Now onto Linux. As you know it is a platform built on open source code. Thus, the sophistication will never be beyond a 1960 dos operating system.
Though well intentioned, it is more a toy than a serious piece of software.
Good Luck
PS Be wary of migrating to Vista. It has definite issues for which as of yet there is no fix.

Macintosh runs on Linux and has a cleaner interface, but hides most of the administrative functions and has fewer programs available than Windows or Linux. Comes with Plug N Play. Linux is more stable than Windows but can be frustrating to get things done until you learn your way around. I have heard of Linux systems running over 4 years without rebooting, even while hosting websites and a mail server. Plug N Play is flaky. Windows. What can I say? Everyone knows Windows, how it has more software available for it, has many more options to get things done quicker than the other two systems, yet with that comes rebooting more often to prevent crashing. Comes with Plug N Pray.

Mac OS X is beautiful, and more plentiful when it comes to software. Linux is blazing fast, but almost no commercial dev supports it. Linux is great (I use it), but is too hard if you're not a techno geek. Get Mac OS X. In a sense, it's way better. Never switch back to Windows. Windows is a pile of junk, always has been, always will be.

I use all three on a regular basis, but I do most of my productivity work on a Mac because it is far less susceptible to crashes, and my workflow is better due to things like expose and a much cleaner interface.
