ask it as a friend to him. be like "hey are you going to the dance?? do you wanna go with me..as friends" the good thing about this is you have a date and the bad thing is, its as friends
if you do it as a note make sure you say "i didn't see you all day so.... (say some other stuff and) wanna go to the dance?? you most likely will get a yes if you cover the question up by saying you wanna go as friends and don't say it as a date like you want to go out. so cover up the Q.

that shows you really want to be his date and it shows confidence... guys love a girl w/ confidence... and he's worth the time and effort right? it's lame to ask a friend to ask him and it shows lack of confidence if you write a note... so just ask in person
