In May I visited an island where turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. The island is a marine park and is strictly controlled. The beaches are out of bounds except for the rangers between 6pm and 6am. However we were escorted as a group when 1 green turtle came ashore about 9pm and were allowed to watch as she laid her eggs. Beautiful thing. A short while later, that evenings hatchlings (there are a bunch usually every night) were released but only after we were allowed to hold 1 each, think of a name for it, and make a wish for it before it was released. Beautiful thing. We went to bed and set the alarm for 05.50 thinking we might catch a straggler or two once the beaches open. We were on the beach just after the end of curfew and as luck would have it I almost tripped over this little disorientated fellow flapping about like mad. The tempting thing was to pick him up and place him in the water. But nature doesn't work like that so we just stood guard and waited for him to find his way. Eventually he found his way into the tide and we watched as every ten metres or so this little head bobbed up and down as he swam away. Most Beautiful thing. EVER!
