Was invented apperently in Sumer, around the 5th millenia B.C. before even written language! Which proves what I've always known; beer has historically been more important to the survival of man than books.

The oldest proven records of brewing are about 6,000 years old and refer to the Sumerians. Sumeria lay between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers including Southern Mesopotamia and the ancient cities of Babylon and Ur.
