I don't know about everybody else, but my 12 year old daughter says it ALL THE TIME...and I find it to be very annoying!

I don't know... the weird thing is that Americanization is so prevalent right now that people in other countries find a way to mimic even the worst in America. For instance, in Brazil they are now using a word akin to "like" in the US to serve the same function: empty chatter.
The word in Portuguese is: assim (like)

The same thing with the now-defunct "You know" and still used annoyingly "You see what I'm saying". The users of these phrases obviously have a limited vocab.

Like, I don't know. But people were complaining about it in the 1950s, too, when "like" became a big component of beatnik slang.
