"Do I feel joy again? Methought the germ of it was dead in me! O Hester, thou are my better angel! I seem to have flung myself - sick, sin-stained, and sorrow blackened - down upon these forest leaves, and to have risen up all anew, and with the powers to glorify Him that had been merciful! This already a better life! Why did we not find it sooner?"

The person speaking was apparently very sad but this person called Hester has helped the narrator out of this situation in some way. The narrator must have lay down to rest upon a bed of leaves feeling like life was not worthwhile, but then woke up to a new vision of life in which the narrator is thanking the Almighty for that which s/he has been granted. Now the narrator is seeing how much better life is with this new perspective in view and is wondering how s/he did not see it before.
