Well if your boat sinks while in the navy you are in trouble, but if your boat sinks while in the coast guard you just need to stand up and walk to shore. LOL......sorry....old joke about the Shallow water sailors. Being on the coast of Florida there is always activities going on that require the services of the coast guard, so get ready to work, but I would guess it is very rewarding.

Stay away from the Navy, unles you like serving aboard a ship with 5000 other people and spending sixmonths a year out to sea. coast guard has ships with deployments on average of 2 months, and plenty of other land stations and air stations. Go watch the new movie the Guardian, they did a good job depicting Coast Guard life.

The thing about the Coast Guard that always worried me was their unofficial motto "You have to go out - you don't have to come back"
The Navy seemed to be made up entirely of LST's Large Stationary Targets.
I went in the Army myself and damned if they did not shoot me anyway. I guess he did not see the red cross.
So you pays your money and you takes your chances.
But stay away from Uncle Sam's Misguided Children they will get you killed
As far as the Air Force they are not really part of the military so I think I will just leave them alone

Okay....cut right to it. In the Coast Guard there is no certainty. You could be in a galley one day then up a mast the next. In the Navy you can pick a specific job you want to do, and you are guaranteed the training for that job and equivalent college credit

Well, each has the bonuses and problems.
I think it depends more on what you are looking for. I can tell you that in the Coast Guard, you tend to cross-train more and learn several jobs. While the Navy does this to some extent, you still concetrate more in one profession than others.
So, before you join, try to really look at what you are wanting to do. Then talk to the recruiters and see how your interests fit in with their needs.

To the first person, Know what you're talking about before you start opening your mouth. Im a Corporal in the USMC and you don't have to be a citizen to join. If that was the case then their wouldnt be citizenship ceremonies, hell they have huge ones in Iraq. Joining the military is one of the quickest ways to become a citizen in the states. I'm not sure about the whole legal resident etc. stuff but a citizen is not a requirement.
