Not at all a trivial question, as I discoveed while pondering a plausible answer to it. I guess the most interesting one, which we would otherwise never know the exact answer fo, would be: how did life begin? We know much of the conditions prevailing at the time, but the exact means by which the chemicals in the primordial ocean became something capable of reproduction will probably always be a mystery.
