I'm a RN who is a Psychiatric Nurse Educator and taught Nursing for over 20 years. Yes, yes, yes antipsychotic drugs do affect the mental state of healthy individuals. Antipsychotic drugs alter the neurotransmitters in the brain. If a person has mental illness with abnormal levels of neurotransmitters then this kind of medication helps the brain neurotransmitters (hormones) get back in balance and thereby stop the symptoms of thought disorders such as delusions, etc. However antipsychotic medications given to people without transmitter imbalance will cause permanent brain damage including the totally disabling behaviors of slurred speech, poor balance, inability to concentrate, extreme fatigue, flat affect, tearfulness, nervousness, tremors, etc. Presently a Psychiatrist in my city is in the Courts for alledgedly giving his wife an antipsychotic medication( used primarily for schizophrenia) for a period of over 5 years because she reportedly had a problem falling asleep at night. The undisputible fact is that the wife now has extensive documented brain damage as well as most of the symptoms I previously described and is no longer able to care for herself despite being off the medication for over 1 year. I could give you lots of other examples from my clinical experience but the previous example should make you aware of the potential damage of antipsychotic medications when they aren't closely monitored and evaluated by professionals. I hope this gets the point across . Good luck to you.

why would a healthy person take antipsychotic drugs? psychosis is not something that is permanently cured, so i guess either the person was healthy in the first place or is still psychotic with some symptoms. side effects usually goe away when u stop a medication, some of the side effects u mentioned however may be aymptoms of psychosis too and sometimes its difficult to say which caused what.

Antipsychotic drugs certainly affect healthy individuals too, antipsychotic drugs interfere with chemical balances in the brain. I dont know if there is any research on the exact effects (i guess there must be) but it is common sense that it have an effect. it is like when your tap works normal and u go loossen it.

There are many misunderstandings that can happen here when we answer questions like this, we may give some information but please dont hesitate to ask your doctor. it is his/her job to help u! s/he knows the history and he has the client in front of him to make a full evaluation. Each case is unique, there may are factors that we miss when we talk in general. Take care :)

I take Seroquel which is an anti-psychotic and when i stopped it the side effects i had while being on it (drowsiness) went away. I don't believe there is any permanent after effects from these medications but who knows i might be watching TV tomorrow and see a commercial thats says "If you or anyone you know have ever taken the drug Seroquel call the law office of so and so because you could be entitled to a cash settlement."

I was forced to take antipsychotics because I was on drugs and no one knew it, clozapine I wanted to experiment with again because of how fast I could count but it gave me OCD and convulsions and later paroxysms. You have to be in the right state of mind before taking an antipsychotic because if you aren t feeling very positive or optimistic, an antipsychotic will keep you in that state the whole time you are on it.

Most of the side effects will disappear with discontinuance of the dosing, except for tardive dyskinesia, which is a tough one.
