I have a Basset Hound that my family got just a little over a year ago, he was a rescue animal from hurricane Katrina. He has been doing really well, we think he is somewhere between 2 and 5 years old.

The poor animal has been through alot, but I'm really worried about him. When I woke up this morning there were reddish brown stains on the blanket in his dog bed. I checked him to see if he was hurt and didn't notice anything.

As he was walking away from me though I saw that his but was covered in something red. I called him back over and lifted his tail up, there awas a red mucus-like substance stuck to it and after wiping it away with toilet paper it looked like there was another hole it was coming from.

The hole it was coming from was about the size of a small pea, and looked more like rip ing the skin. I've heard that when some dogs get scared they "drop their sacs." is that what happened or am I right to be worried?

He also has a problem with sometimes munching on his but, could this be part of what caused it?

I did take him to a vetthe morning after I posted this, and it turned out it was just an obstructed anal sac, not infected thank god.

Sounds like obstructed anal sacs. Easy to take care of, but a little unpleasant. If you don't want to do this, take him to a vet right away. Obstructed sacs can become infected. If he's really bothered now, they might be already.

What to do : You only have to extract the liquid to ease the pressure. To squeeze the anal sacs takes a bit of time, so make yourself comfortable. Small dogs are easier to handle on top of a table covered with new paper. Big dogs and be treated on a bath tub or in the shower.

To keep your hands clean, use disposable gloves. Lubricate the fingers with Vaseline. You will also need paper handkerchiefs or cotton balls to pick the extracted liquid from the sacs.

Get someone to help you hold the dog putting an arm around his neck and the other around the abdomen. Dogs don't like being touched on rear, for which you will need help to keep him still.
The anal sacs are found at both side of the anus, a little lower. Give pressure with the fingers behind the sac and "milk" carefully most of the cases, liquid will come out. You can squeeze one sac at a time or both at the same time. But do it carefully. Because if you press too hard you may damage the sac and provoke a hemorrhage or other problems.

More than likely he got a little carried away with his 'munching'. This can be a sign that he has worms though so you need to check his stool for them. Yes it sounds gross and guess what, it is. Still, it's something that needs doing so give it a shot. Next time he does his business use a twig or something to investigate the feces for any white wormy things. If you do find such then it's a simple fix by getting some deworming pills from your vet or local pet store. Good luck and also a big at thumbs up for adopting a rescue animal.

Most likely this is an abcessed anal gland that has ruptured with the dog's munching "help." When a dog involuntarily releases the contents of the anals (ususally out of fright or extreme stress), it does not create a second hole as you are describing. Please see your vet without delay. DO NOT follow Richard's instructions - if the gland is already infected and abcessed, you will do more harm than good trying to remedy it yourself! Once the initial problem has been treated and resolved, you will need to keep an eye out for future occurances - dogs with anal gland problems often have repeat episodes.

A vet should look him over. Find one that has reasonable rates. The dog could be injured, have eaten something he shouldn't or actually have a hole that penetrated his bowel. Am glad there are people like you to give these little victims a home.

more than likely he had an impacted anal gland that he bit at until it ruptured... but a trip to the Vet may be your best chance at finding out exactly.

Sweetie...PLEASE take him to a Vet, you say he has been through a lot please don't make him go through any more! It could be something very minor, but not taking care of it could make it worse! Please do the right thing and take him to a good Vet, because that is what good pet owners do! Best wishes :-)
