My answer is different depending on how bad the event was (if it was something really horrible vs. being scared by a spider or something).

If it was something really bad, I suggest talking to someone about it. A trusted friend, maybe? Or you could talk to a counselor or a therapist.

If it was something relatively minor, I would suggest accepting that you were scared of it, but still maybe talking to someone about it. If it had to do with another person, maybe talk to them about it and say what it was that bothered you.

Don't forget it. Just remember it differently. Close your eyes and imagine it in black and white on a movie screen playing. Pick the strongest part of the film and pause it. Put a funny picture frame arond it and add in some comic talk bubbles. Be creative. Add circus music. Have fun with it. Then, once you're satisfied that it's now affecting you in a more peaceful way, try as hard as you can to get the same affect you had from it before you started. I don't know how much better you'll feel about it not affecting you the old way, because you can really learn from these experiences.

If it was something that made a lasting impression on your brain you can never really get rid of it. But you can supress it by keeping the same mechanisim to push it back into your sub conscous brain. Like maybe everytime it comes up think of a happy song or yellow roses in a field. This will remove it and make you able to deal with it more.

If this is horrible and ugly the more you talk to someone about it the eassier it is to take it away. That is why many go to therapists and psychs. Taking takes it to the front and releases it. Sometimes if you surpress it you get other bad symtoms like health related or depression or lack of self-esteem. It can stay with you a lifetime. So try to solve the problems now.

Many time with rape, incest, or abuse you have to work it out by reading about it, talking to those you feel safe with, and by realizing it was not your fault. We do not cause the bad things that happen to us. They will happen to someone and we just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Those dark spirits will use laight spirits (like you ) to feed their egos. Work it out, work thorugh it for hapiness. It is possible I know. Been there.

It is understandable why you may think that to have this memory rubbed out is the answer but it will come out in other ways. (i.e. Headaches or other health problems as well as phobias) Get to a therapist and start talking through. sometime it gets harder before it gets better. Facing it is the only real thing to do.Believe me I've been there. Talking with a professional is the best course.
