Why do many people view education in public schools so negatively

Education has the potential to help or limit things which are critical to most people - their own futures and those of their kids. There is a natural suspicion of the state, thus an assumption that anything "public" is going to be done in a shoddy, unfeeling manner. It is interesting to me that so many people lump all "public" or all "private" schools togehter, since there is obviously a huge quality range in each group.

The fact that is failing makes it a BIG political issue. Graduation rates are down in most parts of the country and kids are just not as smart as they used to be and state mandated tests prove this point. Since the Public Education System is a publically taxpayer funded program the fact that it is failing means many people have the right to be angered and ask the important question, "Where is my money going?"

Money
Where there's cash, there's politics.

They're viewed negatively b/c our younger generation is horrid. What do those horrid kids have in common- they all go to public school.

Public schools have to serve everyone, so they get associated with the ones noone (not even their mamas) wants to claim..
