I have had 2 of my cats with urinary tract infections. I know that every cat is different but I feel like if it's a male cat then some of the symptoms will be the same. Some of the common signs that I noticed they both had were continuous licking the private area, frequent trips to the litterbox, painful cries, sleeping and fever. There is really nothing you personally can do except take him/her to the vet immediatly. Female cats are known to pass these "crystals" but males cannot. They will more than likely be catherterized and given pain medicine and in the office for 2 days and come home with antibiotcs and special formula food. It's a good idea if you are continuning to have cats to do more research on the warning signs and precautions. Good Luck!

the most common are frequent urination or straining to urinate...but the most important question really is, is your cat a boy or girl?...if you suspect your male cat has a urinary tract infection, i would get him to the vet quickly...like tonight...if he's straining, has bloody urine, or has a history of crystals definilty get him to the vet tonight...male cats often get urinary obstruction which can cause death if left untreated. A lot of male cats die in the litterbox just trying to go to the bathroom. Males have such small urinary passageways so it's easy for crystals to build up and eventually block the passage all together. Now if your cat is female, she is at less of a risk, but a urinary tract infection definitly needs to be addressed. She will squat without producing urine or maybe little drops at a time. Also, it may be very bloody or pink colored, and/or amy be cloudy. Your vet will put her on systemic meds and if it happens a lot with your cat, he may put her on Science Diet C/D...which is a food that helps reduce crystal production by keeping the pH of the urine around neutral or acidic...

NUMBER ONE SIGN: Blood in the urine. Usually if the cat has this, they will NOT use the litter box as they want to show you that something is wrong. Also, going frequently and meowing ALOT. If you don't get the cat to the vet, it WILL become blocked and it IS fatal ! So, if you THINK that your cat has this, take it to the vet a.s.a.p. DON'T wait until the morning as it could be way too late. This goes for both male and female cats.

I have a 16 yr old male cat who frequently has this problem. He will make frequent trips to the litter box but can't urinate. Meows like he's in pain. You can't put something like this off, take your cat to the vet. The vet even had to put a catheter in my cat once since he had a blockage. Male cats have a tendency to have more kidney problems than females, says my vet, anyway.

My cat took to peeing in odd places. The bathtub, any dish especially the food bowl. They also can tend to walk with their hind end tucked under but not always. Excessive water intake to no water intake. If you touch under their belly and it's is tender and makes them upset or if you do it along the spine by the kidney area and it makes them upset. My cat also walked around yowling. Please do not wait this can harm your animal permanently.

UTI usually happens in fixed males....and you can tell because he will usually litterally scream (a high pitched yowl) because it hurts.
