The experience can be debilitating.

I was checked into a state run facility because of an overdose. Being locked up with crazies for a week was not fun at all.

I did receive medical treatment, but we didn't do much, aside from sit around and watch TV/Movies and read.

A very humbling experience;

Are you still able to do that in the USA.? We don't have any public
mental health institutions in Australia. There are a few very small & exclusive private ones but they are out of reach of the average person.

What used to happen if you checked yourself into one, you were at the mercy of the medical staff.

Before you do something this drastic, go see a counselor or Clergy Person. This will stay on your record for the rest of your life and don't believe because you checked yourself in voluntarily, you can leave if you want to, not so, if your Psychiatrist takes your remarks in your session and interprets them to the clinics advantage, seriously, he can keep you there for seventy-two hours, then you will be going before a so called "board" and they can keep you longer, you are a cash cow to them.Some of these private luxury clinics are big money makers and they want to keep their "guests" as long as they can.

I'm sure they run a whole bunch of test and evaluate you to see if anything what type of disorder you have then they prescribe treatment and medication and time that you will need to stay
the way they portray it it doesn't seem humane at all I think most of those poor people are miss treated

I heard that checking in yourself is a lot better then someone else doing the job. If someone else does it, it is very hard to get released.

Not much. You'll see a doctor eventually and have blood drawn and vitals checked. Mostly you sit around. Usually, a diagnosis is made in that time.

It is said that crazy people seldom think they are the nutty ones but, rather, that they are the only sane ones. So, they probably won't let me in.

If you do it voluntarily I think you are there at your own will and must consent to taking any medications. You may also leave any time you like.... I think.
