no women do not have less ribs than men....

But for Adam, no suitable helper was found. So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and brought her to the man.

Notice what this doesn’t say. It doesn’t say anything about how many ribs Adam had before or after this “surgery,” and especially it says nothing, whatsoever, about how many ribs Eve had! Nowhere does it say that Eve had more ribs than Adam. Who made that assumption without checking? Wouldn't it be just as logical to guess (also without checking) that if she was created “second” that God might have made her with the same number of ribs as the new, reduced number that Adam now had? Wouldn’t it really be more logical to guess that God might have created her with the same number of ribs as Adam just to avoid confusion? Genesis doesn't say one way or the other, so the only way to know is to cut open cadavers and start counting. Who has done that — the theologians or the biologists? My guess is that, once again, if human misinterpretations are set aside and if it is remembered that theology looks at “why” while science looks at “how,” there is no “conflict” between what the Bible, itself, is saying and what biologists know to be true about our bodies.

If, for example, a person would accidentally lose a finger or would have a body part surgically removed, then subsequently that person would create a baby, that baby would still be born with all his or her body parts. Similarly, if Adam had a rib removed, that does not mean that we, his children, would have missing ribs.

I love some of these answers. It's amazing how Christians can bring logic into this story, yet other parts of the Bible are 'meant' to be taken 'literally'. They make an excellent point, in that the DNA of Adam remained unchanged. Adam and Eve's kids wouldn't be missing a rib. However, they miss the broader point. Why would God need a rib to create a woman? Why would he need anything? Why would he even bother waiting? Why not create man and woman at the same time? Why not create many men and many women? Of course, that's when it all becomes part of God's 'plan', and the rules change. Logic no longer enters into the equation....

I am a Christian and I believe that the story of Adam's rib is metaphorical. Why would God choose a rib to represent the woman? It was not from his foot, which would symbolize that man is to dominate, nor was it from his head, which would symbolize that woman was to dominate. The bone came from Adam's side. This, I believe, means that men and women should be equal. I'm not saying this because I'm a feminist, in fact I would love nothing better than to be a stay-at-home-mom at some point, I say this because we each, men and women, have roles we need to play in life and not one is better than the other.

No, we don't have extra ribs-God made a set of ribs for Eve from the one He took from Adam, so everyone has the right amount of ribs to protect our organs.

The story IS - this god person took a rib away from Adam to make Eve. So men should have one rib missing and women should have them all.

If god made the universe and the earth and seas and birds and animals and Adam and everything out of nothing, why was it necessary to recycle part of something he'd already finished to make a woman? Had he run out of parts? Was creation a botch job?

Of course not! Many atheists have tried to say "Christians you must be wrong, males don't have one less rib".That is ridiculous. If your father, for example, had his finger amputated and then your mother became pregnant by him, would you be born with a missing finger? No.
