Salt will pull water out of the plant through osmosis keeping it from growing, or killing it if the salt solution created is hypertonic to a certain level.

Yes..Salt affects the growth of many plants. The higher concentration of salt outside of the plant cells in the soil causes water to move outside of the cells to try and equalize the concentration. Some root cells of plants that do not tolerate salt may die, and if bad enough the plant will die. The damage gives the plant a burnt look, often on the leaf edges first.

Salt usually kills plants. If you pour an excess of salt in a patch of dirt, it's usually hard to have any sort of decent growth.

Salt will kill most plants, very few can survive with a salty soil base. Some oceanside species can tolerate a little more salt than others.

Salt usually retards or kills plants ,, thereby the saline problems of soils. i.e Nile basin.

There are sodium hording plants i.e coconut , brassicas and beets (and more).

The trick to growing these plants is to make the correct level of salt available.


Even for these plants , excess will kill.

There are a few salt resistant grasses, but not many.
