There's a guy I recently started getting to know the past few days, and I think there may be something there, but I'm not 100% positive. Before I actually start flirting with him, instead of just being friendly like I usually have been toward him, I need to know if he's taken. What's the easiest way to find out without seeming like you're asking for a reason? Like, a casual way to find out through conversation?

You: How was your weekend? Do anything special?
Him: I saw The Grudge.
You: Your girlfriend must have been terrified.
Him: She wouldn't go.

Assume he has one and mention her. It seems more casual. And he is less likely to lie. He may think you already know. If he doesn't have one, he'll tell you.

pay someone some money to ask for you, since it might be awkward. if you must, start talking about how awful some ex of yours was, something like that, and then ask him if he's got any ex horror stories, and if he's taken and normal, he'd probably add in the end that his current girlfriend is so much better.

Ask him questions like what he does on the weekends or whatever. if he doesn't eventually mention a g/f then he prob doesn't have one. that is very admirable of you to make sure he is single first....a lot of girls are just sl.ut.s and don't care. lol

I'd employ a bit of a *spy*. Someone that the guy will probably never know, will never see, and whose not afraid to ask.

Ask one of your friends to ask him if he has one. If she doesn't like him, she won't care and you get your information. WARNING ON THAT ONE: She might like him, or bribery might be needed!
