Can you walk me through (basically) how one becomes one? From where and how you apply, to what the application involves to how long and what it takes.

(don't tell me about how much you hate cops, I really don't care)

Wow already insults. Hm.

Well I asked it here because often times you get a clearer picture from people who aren't trying to recruit you.

Requirements to become a police officer vary and how you become a police officer varies depending on the department. Visit the websites of the police departments that you might be interested in working for. Police department websites often provide information about their applicant requirements, about how to apply, and about their hiring process. Some relatively common minimum requirements include having at least a high school diploma or ged, being a citizen, being at least 21 years old, having a valid driver's license, and having no felony convictions. Some relatively common steps in hiring processes include application, written test, physical fitness test, interview, drug test, medical examination, and background investigation. Some departments will hire you and send you to the academy. In this case, you would already have a job and be paid while attending the academy. Some departments want to hire applicants that have already completed the academy. Some academies allow you to apply, and if you meet their requirements and are accepted, pay tuition to attend hopes of getting hired by a police department. You should consider getting a college degree if you can. Many departments require or prefer applicants to have college. Many applicants have college. Having a degree could help you get hired. Some departments pay their officers more if they have a degree. Having a degree could also help you get promoted during your career. Getting police officer jobs is becoming more and more competitive. Do whatever you can to make yourself the best candidate that you can. For example, don't do anything illegal, maintain a good reputation, keep a good driving record, don't get bad credit, improve all of your communication skills as much as possible, practice to improve your observation and memory skills, and become as physically fit as you can.

you have to just apply to alotof them, there are well over 100 applications for any one job opening, so most don't even get called back

In some departmetns you have to take a written test before you can even apply. So best thing you can do is call the department and ask them. also most give insturctions on line.

IN GA and some other states you can also pay your way though the police academy and normally get a job offer while in school

Chances are you need to take a civil service test and get on the list. This could take a few tries, so in the mean time go to college and take classes. It doesnt even have to be classes in law enforcement. Computer science, goverment, photography, whatever you are interested in.

While in college run, you will need to pass a physical fitness exam. Pushups, situps, running, (look up cooper standards).

Research where you want to work, if you want to work where you live now great. There are cops all over, some places pay better, some have better weather, some have more action. Some will be cold, boring, and life draining.

Never fear...I'll actually answer ur question. First thing you need to do is find out who is hiring and about to give their initial test. You can find this info on line or in the newspapers. Or just start calling departments and asking.....some will invite you to come in and fill out a recruitment card and they will contact you when they are about to test.

Once you have that info, start testing everywhere possible. Even if it's a town you don't wish to work in, still take their test for the experience.

Most departments will compile a "list" after the testing and they will hire off said list for one to two years....then test again and make a new list. the more lists you can get on, the better chance you'll get the call.

Unfortunately you can't be too picky when you are looking for that first police officer job....I was hired by the second place I tested with, but one guy in our dept tested for 9 yrs before he got hired.

Good luck.

Contact the department you are looking to apply for. They can help you with all that. Normally, job announcements will let the applicant know the process.

Municipal Departments begin their screening process with a civil service examination. That's usually followed by a physical exam, a physical agility exam, a psychological screening and a background check. After that, you're ranked on a civil service list and can be called when there's vacancies.

Call the nearest precinct to see if you can become a "ride-along!" You can watch the officer in action and have him explain the duties,
responsibilities etc. You can ask him how to get ready for the exam and before you leave the station house, pick up the necessary paperwork
for the entrance exam dates and employment
questionnaire.
