My husband and I are talking about getting a dog and we want a small dog but not a weiner dog or the dog from the taco bell comercials. We want something a little bigger but not big. We have children and dont want a dog that sheds too much either. What should we get. We also don't want to spend a arm and a leg to get one. Any suggestions?

Cockers are great little dogs and good with kids, you could probably get one from a shelter

A MINI Australian shepherd! my boyfriend has one and she is so great with his young neices. The dog is a herding dog and keeps the kids together. she does shed but she is taken to the groomer once a month to be trimmed and shaved and that makes her barley shed. you will need to train your dog and this breed is very smart! also introduce your puppy to many people and take her everywhere you can to socialize her. make sure you buy from a reputable breeder.( a good breeder will take your dog back if you could no longer care for it at any age!) you should never buy a dog from a pet store or from a newspaper. do your research on any dog you do choose and buy books about the breed so you know what to expect. Good luck. oh yea and NEVER buy from a breeder that sells puppys year round.

I would suggest the link to the site I provided, it gives you every bit of info you want. Once you find the breed you are most interested in, I would suggest searching for a rescue group for that breed. We have too many dogs & pups in this world with no homes, and so many rescue organizations trying to place them. I have 4 dogs, 3 were rescues, I have a chihuahua, american staffordshire, great dane, & rottweiller. I also have two children and all of my dogs are treated as well as my children. They are all inside and only go out for potty time. Remember whatever you choose, to treat it as your family member, not a pet, they need attention and love too. Remember to RESCUE if possible!!!

In this case, it sounds like a mixed breed might be your best option. The Humane Society and other animal shelters would be a great source to find your perfect pet. They have many wonderful dogs who would fit your requirements, and a lot of the animals are already housebroken.

One of my all-time favorite dogs was a mixed breed that we adopted from the local Humane Society. Max was a terrific dog with lots of personality, and I loved him dearly. I hope you're lucky enough to find your own "Max" for your children to grow up with.

I would say go to petfinder.com and search local shelters and rescues for a dog--SO many dogs need good homes and So many are dying everyday for lack of good homes--TAKE the whole family to meet the dog and talk to them about the dogs they have They will be able to help you find the perfect dog for your family--This way your getting a pet--saving a life--AND the pet will be UTD on shots and altered so that expense is out of the way--ADOPTION fees vary but most are $100 or so and you wont find a better deal if you really look into it---I Work in a Vet's office and the price of shots and spay/neuter will be ALOT more then that.. GOOD luck in your search

Rescue one from your local dog sanctuary. You are far more likely to get a good dog there than at a breeder (by good i mean health wise) Too many breeders have resorted to inbreeding to achieve maximum numbers of pups and ending up with dogs with multiple health problems. And it will be cheaper aswell. Not to mention you are giving a mistreated or abandoned dog a new start in life. Good Luck!!!

well there are basenji's, they don't shed that much, but idon't know how much they cost.,There are also schipperke's their small and quite cute but they have seasonal shedding. I found this, check out iams.com,then click on dogs, from there scroll down to useful links and click on Breed selector. From there you go thru a check list and they will give you a list of selections that best fits your needs. Good Luck!

You should get a rottweiler puppy. When raised with a loving family and the right training they are a great dog. Very obedient and loyal, and will provide protection for your family.

I suggest a shelter dog or one from a breed rescue that you are interested in.

If you want a pure bred, please email me and I can help suggest breeds that will fit your family and lifestyle.

I can also help make a smooth transition for your new canine into your household, and give you some training/housebreaking advice.
