Hi, I woke up this morning with a kind of "scratch" in my throat (not sore) but more like a dry irritation. By the afternoon, my voice had started to go when I tried to talk properly and only sounded normal if I strained it. Now it's almost gone, but my throat isn't sore or scratchy at all! What's the betting by morning I'll not be able to utter a word - anyone had this recently?

Just as an add-on... the day before I last as expected I woke up with NO VOICE... literally nothing came out when I tried to speak.... yesterday was a bit better in that I could squeak. Today I am rather hoarse and deep. Tomorrow?

Believe it or not when you get laryngitis it doesnt always hurt. You just cant talk. Which my husband said was a blessing. :)
Just rest your vocals and see your family physican and get some medicine because you probably have an infection down in there.

You know it could actually be allergies. A lot of times you can loose your voice with allergies and not have any other symtoms. But if this is the first time its ever happen I'm not sure. Because I used to get allergies bad and I'd lose my voice without any other symptoms? Probably be best to check with the doc!

I am afraid you are almost certainly describing a viral illness, so nothing is really going to affect the severity or the duration. Take paracetamol and adequate fluids and withe Diflamm or Chloraseptic sprays my reduce local throat pain. On no account gargle with either salt water or aspirin and the first is potentially dangerous and the second is actually locally irritant!

Yes it is common. I had it too. Just try not to talk, give your voice a rest. that is the best thing you can do for it. you can go to your pharmacy and pick up lozenges. I used "thayers slippery elm lozenges" that really helped! suck on hard candy for now, it will help keep your throat lubricated. you will be back to your normal self in a few days, good luck!

I had this a few years ago. Totally lost my voice for about 3 days with no discomfort whatsoever. It's quite tedious after day one, the novelty wears off really quickly.

Hope it clears up soon!xx

I am sure it is simply laryngitis/pharyngitis !! BUT beware , should it persist, without discomfort for longer than 7 days please see a GP.There are other medical reasons why you could loose your voice !!! Good Luck, get well soon.
