My back has been sore and uncomfortable on and off for a few years now. I had an xray 3 years ago but nothing showed up. I was offered physio but chose not to go to it as i was too busy. I have to get whoevers with me to hug me and squeeze my back hard so it makes clicking noises like knuckles so i can feel comfortable again when it goes weird. Does anyone know why this is?

The clicking you hear is vertebrae moving around. It also reveals exactly how much muscular tension you have. Bones have no physical means to move themselves; the only way a bone moves is if a muscle moves it. Each of your vertebrae has upwards of 36 muscles attached to it that act like guy wires. If muscle tone on each side of a vertebrae ( or any other bone/joint) is equal then the bone rests in normal position. However, if tension is increased unilaterally then the bone is pulled out of normal position. That clicking and popping you here when pressure is applied to your back is the vertebrae being moved to normal position (hopefully!). The problem is that you're not doing anything to release the pressure caused by overly tight muscles so the vertebrae just pop right back into misalignment. Chiropractors call that a subluxation.
Stop ignoring the problem as you've already done up 'til now!! If you REALLY want to resolve this problem you must be proactive because it will not fix itself and only get worse. First suggestion: go see a muscle specialist like a Neuromuscular Therapist, Rolfer, or highly trained deep tissue massage therapist. They will be able to identify your muscular holding patterns, what you're doing to cause them, and release the tissue with massage and stretching. You DO NOT need a chiropractor! He will only do what your friends and relatives are already doing, namely: popping the vertebrae into "normal" position while completely ignoring the tight muscles that have misaligned them in the first place. If you know of a chiro that combines good, corrective massage work with spinal adjustments then use him/her, the adjustments will hold much better. However, these types of chiros are few-and-far-between.
You may also be interested in a book I've found quite valuable for resolving muscular, postural pain patterns: "Pain Free- A Revolutionary Method for Stopping Chronic Pain", by Pete Egoscue. He explains very simply what causes your type of pain and how to easily fix it with corrective stretches and exercises you can do at home. His website is egoscue.com.

If you haven't had a definite injury, you might have a thing called dysfunctional syndrome - a bit of a mouthful!
It's a mechanical problem, usually caused by poor sitting posture and aggravated by a change in activity (for example, standing/walking at a summer job, then back to sitting all day at school/college).
It means that the supporting joints in your back are strained and getting a little inflamed from time to time - your facet joints.
If you have this, then you might find you get relief from lying on your back, knees bent, feet resting on the bed, and rolling your knees from side to side. That's nice for stretching out those little joints, but it's no cure.
The quickest cure is to correct your sitting posture. Don't fuss too much over the type of chair you sit in - it's more important to see HOW you sit. Your back should not be C shaped when you sit - if it is, then you're in trouble.
Try this to find a good neutral position for your back while you're sitting - slouch as much as you can, then straighten as much as you can, like a sergeant major, then come to halfway between those two positions. That's the correct position for your back when you're sitting.
You should always sit with your bum against the back of whatever you sit in - otherwise your lower back is straining straight away.
You should go to physio - they should be able to treat local pain and advise you about your specific problems.
Don't expect it to go away on it's own - that's how people end up with chronic back problems. These things can get worse if left untreated, not better.

You should probably try therapy. Or try taking some pilates. It would probably stop the hurting. And it does feel like something is hugging you and squeezing your back.
Or it's probaby how you sit. Do you sit slouched over? In a bad position? Try sitting up straight if that is the problem.

If nothing showed up in an xray, then you don't have a spine!. The noise is probably your ribs rattling around loose inside.
