First of all make sure that you wear a mask. I have found that the sanding sponges work great. After the first coat of joint compound I use a medium grit sponge, one in each hand, and after the second coat I use a fine grit. The one I like is rectangular with one side having a 45 degree angled edge for getting in the corners, they are quite effective. All of that mixed with a little patience, and you are on your way to a smooth wall. You can find them at the Depot for 3 dollars and some change.

YES! Get a "pole sander" from a building supply store such as Lowes or Home Depot. Ask for assistance. They will show you what you need. FYI, the sander part looks like screen. Please be advised to wear a dust mask, or your sinuses will drive you nuts for days! Also, the dust will get on everything. seal yourself in the room unless you want sheet rock dust on every inch of your house! Happy sanding!

there is another way! it is called MUDDING!
yup, all you need to do is have a bucket of clean water, and a good sponge or a few, this is a slow process to start but just start wetting the spackle ( it is best to do when spackle is wet to start with but can be done after) using the very wet sponges just spread the spackle, almost like sanding it but it gets spread better and no dust, and you just need to watch how you go the more you do it the better you will get with it, and you will get a nice smooth finish

There is a hand sander with a "screen" on it instead of sand paper. Less airborne particles. It will be smooth enough for texturing.

Wear a mask and goggles.

the easy way is to get someone else to do it. If you must do it use sanding screen and a block made to hold it. it will not clog up like sand paper. you should only be sanding a joint or patch

There are pole sanders that are powered and have a vacuum hookup to keep the mess down. That would be the easy way.
