Rabies is a virus that affects the central nervous system. If you are bitten by a rabid animal you must be treated by a doctor. There is a series of vaccinations you must have.

I'm not sure what the symptoms are, but once a human has contracted rabies, it's usually fatal. If a suspect animal bites, I think the human has 48 - 72 hours to begin the vaccination series. (Just went through this with a niece.) If you have been bitten, get to a hospital fast and have them begin the series on you.

If untreated, rabies is fatal. If you handle an infected animal, you need to get treatment with rabies immune globulin. Once the symptoms start, it's too late.
