Watch a favorite movie where the character has a brother or sister, even the 100 Dalmations movie would work and then ask if they understand how the puppies (or whatever character you choose) has brothers and sisters. Then explain that in a few months he/she will be having a new brother or sister to play with just like the puppy,etc... That will give them a visual to relate the baby to.

Kids are very perceptive. Tell the truth. I always did. You are going to have a baby brother or sister. Ask for name suggestions and help with everything. I had 2 boys 11 months apart. I had not said much about the 2nd one to my then 4 year old. I guess she thought we were still talking about the new baby she had instead of the other one she was gettting when we said "the new baby" Then, one day, she just said, "Mom, you look like you are havin' another baby." I then made it clear that I was. It was cute. They are 16 and 1/2, 13 and 12 now. I have a 4 year old too!!!!

I'm 3 months pregnant with my 2ND child. My son is 3 1/2. We had talked to him about being a big brother for several months before getting pregnant. So when I became pregnant we told him that there was a baby growing in my tummy and that he will be a big brother. He is very excited and very much a part of it. He talks to my belly, or will ask me what the baby is doing... he talks about being a big brother. He is very excited and has become very protective of me. (which is very cute) You know your child better than anyone, and will know when the right time is to break the news to them. I know that there are several books out for children on this topic. If your child likes books you might want to go that route.

Tell your child however you feel is the right way and he/she would understand. My only advice is wait until you are in the second trimester. Not only will your child be able to see your growing belly and better understand it, you'll also have made it past the danger zone for miscarriages. I don't want to scare you, but it's just something to think about. Telling your toddler about a new baby might be hard, but having to try to explain why there's no more baby would be even more difficult.

My son was too young to know what was going on, but I was a nanny for a 4 year-old girl and I had to take her to one of my appointments with me and she saw the baby on the ultra sound and she was really excited and she kept asking me if the baby was at home. I told her that it was going to be close to Christmas when the baby would come out.

Tell him or her that mommy is going to have a little baby soon for him/her to love and care for and play with. Let him/her touch your belly and feel like a part of the entire pregnancy.

Explain that they are getting a new brother or sister but, it will be a few months before it arrives. Don't get into the sex thing it is not necessary at this time. Just keep any answers simple.
