Going to hybrids or a completely different energy source would mean big losses to auto manufacturers, the oil industry and they are not willing to lose their 'riches'. These two groups will 'milk it' for as long as they can, therefore, our dreams of energy efficient automobiles will probably never materialize completely. Remember......it all comes down to $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ - once you take the source away...people become upset.

All new cars aren't hybrids because hybrids add a signifigant extra cost to the vehicle .
Compare a fuel efficient vehicle to a hybrid of the same class, factoring in the higher fuel cost incurred by the gas against the higher purchase cost of the hybrid ; against the overall mileage of the vehicle per year and they are actually pretty close(usually gas coming out a bit cheaper). So users who can't afford the expense up front of a hybrid choose straigth gas
Hybrids are also so new that repair costs are not know for when the car is 5+ years old. There will be also significant cost to replace the batteries at end of the battery life. And the disposal of batteries is a significant enviro concern.
With Gas prices going up, biodiesel becomes financially viable, as is blended ethanol.
Also the type of vehicle needs to be looked at. My Aveo gets 36 MPG . A hybrid SUV gets 17. Which is better?
North America needs to look at purchasing smaller cars in total. Try and find an SUV or minivan in Europe. They see cars as a tool like any other. They drive Smart cars (91 mpg diesel) or what we consider compacts, because really, how often do you have more than 2 people in the car. How often do you have 4 ?

Hybrid car SUCK!!! (Sorry, no offense) But the truth is that Hybrids are not dependable, cost more, and are just as bad in pollution. Why? Because Hybrid's use batteries. And when you take the batteries out to have them replaced, it get's recycled and all the dangerous chemicals go into the earth (mercury, acid).

If you do some research into the subject you will probably find that the gain of a hybrid car's mileage is not that much better than a lot of normally aspirated cars. A lot of people can't justify the extra cost.

Many people just want to buy non-hybrids to show off or make a statement about their money / power over nature / manliness by buying gas guzzlers like Hummers. I'm proud to say I own no SUV.
