I think it's more than possible. Most people that become legends don't do so because of self-promotion but because those that come afterwards keep adding more and more to the story until suddenly it's bigger than life.

That depends on whether you think its possible for someone to expel demons, heal the blind, bring the dead back to life, walk on water, turn water into wine, feed several thousand people with a few pieces of bread, etc.
Its not only possible that Jesus' life was embellished, its the only rational answer.

You are talking about someone very powerful.
He rose Lazarus from the dead, he fed 5,000
people with 2 fishes and 5 loaves, he healed the blind mind....those are just a few mirales that he performed.
Read in the Book of Daniel about Nebuchadnezzar the king with his pride and not believing in the LORD he was made a animal that ate grass for 7 years.

It's unlikely that any apostle actually wrote a gospel. There are gospels that aren't included in the Bible that are also named after apostles and they were written in the 100s AD. The Gospel of Phillip and The Gospel of Thomas are examples. Most people believe that the gospels in the the Bible were written after 70 AD. Jesus is supposed to have died around 30 AD. I think it's rather doubtfull that the books were even written by the disciples at all.

bc_munkee,
Let's look at that a moment.
Jesus came on the scene and said some nice things. Then the Pharisees thought that what he said was too nice and decided to kill him because they couldn't have people around saying nice things. When the Sanhedrin came after Jesus, all the followers of Jesus ran away being afraid for their own lives, and then after Jesus was crucified, they all together decided to make up stories about him. And then after that they took those stories and talked to people about them LIKE they were the truth. And as they were being whipped, imprisoned, starved, tortured, and put to death for what they were saying, they stuck to their lie.
Does that sound like what you are trying to say?

No Christ is the Messiah. What He did was always out of compassion for others. The Old Testament speaks of Him, And because in the O.T. the law was given to the people, but no one could keep the law, Christ came to fulfill the law, The new Covenant God made with his people that He writes the laws on our hearts and mind by the Holy Spirit which proceeds from God, whenever we accept the Christ is Lord.

Totally possible. I think that is just what happen. Jesus was a great guy with great ideas about how we should live love and all. I think his followers kicked it all up a notch to get other people to believe and listen. That whole threat of hell thing is a great way to encourage people to love God.

What's more possible is that he never existed...since he is just a reworking of older "savior" myths. For some good info on the pagan origins of the christ myth I would recommend this site:
