I served my time doing National Service in the Royal Navy and it was the making of me. Until that time my dear Mum did almost everything for me, but after my 'call up' , apart from the Military side of things, I had to learn to repair, wash and press (iron) my clothing,- and generally learn to look after myself in every way.
Very happy days with lots of good mates all in the same boat. ( Forgive the pun!)
I would not have missed the experience of those two years for anything.

When we look back, there seem to me to be lots of social differences that better explain problems with today's youth rather than conscription. Family and religion seem two obvious changes.
Besides after conscription do we want lots of military trained and organised yobs on our streets? Rather the undisciplined lazy lot we now have! :-)

Maybe five years compulsory reserve training for all eighteen year olds - male and female, with an opt-out clause for the services if they end up with a completely untrainable fruitcake on their hands. It'd provide some part-time money for the reservists, possibly lessen the unemployment payments burden, and provide some necessary work and personal skills.

I think it would go a long way to getting some backbone back into some of the youth in this country today. Please note I say SOME of the youth as they are not all bad, in fact there are quite a few that are decent and hardworking but generally the respect standards have gone down over the years.

As a former Royal Marine I would say that the army would certainly benefit a lot of the youth of today. But immigrants in the British Army?
Where would their loyalties lie?

There are lots of reasons why young people are a 'problem' in our society today, bringing back conscription would not necessarily solve any of them.

I think that a enforced service with in a cadet force or simmlar non comabatant force would be good, but conscript soilders will not want to fight and they will lack loyalty and determination.

Nice sentiment, but if you were a professional solder would you want to work with a lot of mouthy malcontents If your life depended on them?
Quick thought we could put yobs into mine clearing battalions, nice uniform of white tracksuit, baseball cap and trainers with big I D tags on shinny chains. let them kick the cr-p out of the sand till they find one!

If we had it ( and the principle is good)the people of certain religions would not do their duty.
The recent example of the London Lebonese policeman comes to mind.

Possibly, although they should only be used as a rearguard if there was ever a war.
Conscripts are notoriously bad at everything.
