my golden retriever pup (now 5 months old) was the same. It smells awful doesn't it??
just give them a clean with a cotton bud, or you can get ear cleaning wipes from pets at home type shops or via internet. Not a pleasant job, but a necessary one! It's good for the pup to get used to getting his ears handled etc anyway. By the way, the wax is much darker than human wax so don't be alarmed.
If the smell persists after this, then yeah you should maybe take a trip to the vet, but chances are he just needs a wee clear out. Now there'll be no excuse for not coming back when called!!

the pup will have an unsual amount of ear wax this is due to his ears opening fully best way to clean this and stop it from smelling is .dilute some bicarbonate of sode in luke warm water . use a babys oral srynge to squirt the water and solution well in to his ear and work well by rubbing in to the ear canal . once this has had time to loosen the wax he will want to vigoriously shake his head , make sure he is out soors when you do this so the loosned wax can go any where but over your furniture . repeat this several times over a week or so to clear his ears if this dosent solve the problem he may have what the vest call an ear mite that can be picked up from the mother at birth and may need some canaural lotion from the vet it cost approx £18 or $27
pups often pick up ear mites from grass they also pick up grass seed in the ears and this causes the ear to become overley waxy as a protection .if this is infection and is left untreated it can result in the dog loosing an ear as the infection becomes untreatableand, to much damage in the inner ear results in the ear being removed .

This is not normal. Our Dashchund had problems with ear infections and the vet tells us that a bad smell with build up or drainage is a sure sign that an infection is present.
Take your pup to the vet ASAP to have him evaluated as an infection can be so uncomfortable for you dog and cause them to scratch and dig at their ears, making it a bigger problem. Usually a simple ear drop med will clear it up in about 10 days.

Ear wax build up generally does smell, the only thing you can do is clean it every day with an ear cleaning solution which you can ask your vet or the pet shop for. Just clean the inside of the ear flap gently with some solution on a cotton wool pad. Take care not to go to deep into the ear as you will just push it further down and it may become blocked. If his ears smell REALLY bad and are red/weepy they could be infected in which case he will need to see the vet.

It could be ear mites. Very common in dogs and it does smell very bad. Just ear wax isn't going to smell that badly. There is a ear mite med you can get over the counter at the feed store or a pet store. There is also some ear wax removal stuff out there that is better than alchol.

If there is any discharge in your dog's ear, you might want to get it checked by your vet. At 4 months, your pup may still need some vaccinations, so a visit to your vet is probably due anyway. Have them check out the debris in the ear, and look for yeast or bacteria. If it seems like it is just waxy, this is a good time to learn routine ear cleaning, so they can show you how to do that.

NO take him to the Vet. Dont try and treat him yourself!
If you dont know what is causing the condition you could make matters worse!
The Vet is also the best person to show you the correct way to clean his ears, and as a 'floppy eared' breed like him needs to have the ears clean you should learn how !
Wishing you both a long and happy partnership!!!!!!

Not sure if this is breed specific as I don't have much experience with boxers.
But I would check with your vet incase its ear mites or an ear infection. Both can cause these symptoms.

Clean his ears with the ear cleaning solution for dogs at the petshop and cotton balls...not swabs.
Take him to the vet to rule out ear mites, which need medication to get rid of. Also, it could be a yeast/ear infection, which needs antibiotics to clear up.
Smelly, discharging ears could be an allergy, possibly to something in his food. If you have him on local petstore/grocery store brands, it could be because of the preservatives,. sugars, by products, or something else.
I recommend switching him to something like the Fish and Chips formula at http://www.frrco.com/121668 You feed 1/2 as much as local carried brands because of the higher quality ingredients, so it costs only a few cents more per feeding. Also, it is made to not cause allergies, is baked, uses human grade ingredients, and your dog will poop less!!!
Good luck!
