My dog is making a deep coughing sound like when he drinks water. Kinda like gagging. Or just other ocassions. He is half rat terrier and Jack Russel. Does anybody know what this might be? Some person told me it might be heart worms.

Coughing or hacking could be a sign of any number of things. It could be heartworms, heart or respiratory problems, some worms cause coughing, kennel cough ( I would only worry about this if Socko has been boarded recently or around other dogs & not vaccinated), an upper respiratory infection, or even a cold. You should probably take Socko to the vet to get this cough taken care of.

See your vet pronto. Coughing is sometimes a sign of heart conditions or respiratory problems.

Has he had a rabies vaccination? A symptom of rabies is not being able to drink water or choking on it at the least.
Other than that, I'm not really sure...a trip to the vet would probably help.

Does he cough when he's not drinking? Could be kennel cough. See the vet.
