I'm no computer geek but, in my experience a couple of things would be to get Norton System Works which can anylize and optimize your hard drive. There is a free program called Ad-Aware SE Personal you can download from Lavasoft.com
This program scans your drives and will quarentine and/or delete spyware, browser highjack files and other malicious files that have accumilated from the web.

Norton Anti Virus is no doubt the best and it allows you to check yourself and also it tells you when there is a problem! You should get it!

All the best security programs are in that link and they are free and recommended. If you click on the names listed, it will take you to the actual download site.
