As long as the person is able to cough, they are getting air and not in need of assistance until the object is expelled or becomes lodged in the airway. If the coughing is not forceful and the person is not able to get enough air, then they should be assisted by doing the choking maneuver or Heimlich.

if they are coughing they are breathing. So I would suggest a good whack on the back. Might help dislodge whatever is choking. also...Putting your arms over your head increases oxygen flow. If that doesnt work....CPR
