Go to Wall-mart buy some work lights and white lights bulbs (555 kelvin balanced just about every wear now) with a little creativity rig the umbrellas (white are hard to find but there out there)
I've had to do it on assignment when part of my equipment got lost. Not the best but better than nothing.

You CAN use halogen worklights as long as they are all the same kind. Just remember to use a custom white balance for them so it doesn't have a color cast. That said you CAN survive on Ramen noodles and water.... Although it's a viable method I'm not a fan of a continuous light source for portrait work. Too limiting unless you have a VERY high output rig, which would defeat the purpose to me. You could get a single flash setup for under $200 as well. If you go with the halogen worklights BE CAREFUL! Thos bad boys could be used as a space heater in a small room...haha!

If you are good at making things, what you are trying to get is fairly simple to build on your own. You could try 2nd hand stores like the Salvation Army and Goodwill, but even places like the Dollar Store may have materials you can use (I know they have some umbrellas). You might also look online for do it yourself blueprints.

You could also create your own version of this to provide a strong source of soft warm light. Maybe a clip on lamp or a floor lamp with a soft white bulb and then placing white fabric for effect. Maybe a table lamp with a soft white bulb and just the right lamp shade? I am always big on finding creative ways to accomplish a task and save money too. Heck, you might even stumble on a better/easier way to get the job done! Good luck!

I've bought plenty of good used equipment on ebay. Just have to be careful about the seller and check their ratings. You won't always find the deal you want right away, but keep checking every few days and you might find one.
