completely, i'd just divide the cake in half, and viola, you have your cake and can eat it.

No not stupid, cause it applies to..hmmm... let's say a guy or girl having two people to fool around with.....eventually one or the other of the two will find out, then the cake is gone....

Hmmm does the cake have too much icing...I like chocolate, what if I get white cake.....oooh ooh I know Wedding cake you never get a piece of your own wedding cake.

I read a book about the history of common phrases and aparently it used to be 'you can't eat your cake and have it' which would make more sense!

I understand it, but I agree it is a bit of a silly analogy - for example, this cake right here is about to go down the hatch. Who's gonna stop me?!

"You can't have your cake and your penny" is what I was taught as a child. It means the same, but it makes much more sense. It's amazing that the nonsensical version becomes much more widely used! But all too typical!

lots of people misinterpret it. the real saying goes" you cant HALF your cake and eat it too" meaning you cant have the best of both worlds,cause if you HAVE your cake you HAVE it its yours,but if you HALF it its different.that's what a professor in college told me.i don't know
