There are plenty of them. Usually because there are unscrupulous people trying to get or retain power. Of course some wars are not officially declared, and done via terrorists or by state security police. As example- China is not "at war" with Tibet. But plenty of tibetans get murdered everyday of this "peace".
Violence. Not a nice thing. OTOH it is the only thing that can be used to stop violence. Alternatively a _believable_ threat of unrelenting violence can be used to secure peace.
Subjects relating to violence? psychology, strategy.

I think it's all very sad and frustrating. In 2000 the U.S. was in a position to make some positive changes in the world. Now it seems people can only think in terms of war (as if terror could ever be reduced by war). Our current administration is hated and feared by most people including U.S. citizens. I'm hoping my vote will be counted in November, but I can't help but wonder. I think the underlying cause for all this is a shift in the federal government from democratic republic to totalitarian oligarchy. The rich want to stay rich and there are enough dupes who aren't rich but think they will be, or want to kiss up to them that they can all keep things stirred up. The last thing they want is peace. War is too profitable, and it keeps the poor in line (or dead which amounts to the same thing).
