If they can only call 2 numbers - Mommy/Daddy or Grandma?

What if the child had severe allergies?

I don't think a child that young should have a cell phone. The child should never be alone anyway. They should always be with a sitter, who will know how to get ahold of you, or at school. Anyone who is keeping your child should be informed about his allergies and have you phone number. But, to give a child that young a cell phone seems rediculous to me.

A child younger than 16 shouldn't require a cell phone. I'm a mother of 3 and not one of my children will have a cell phone until they start dating, have a job, or start driving their own car. In that case, the phone will ONLY be for an emergency. They will be responsible for paying the bill on it too.
Kids as young as 6 or 7, regardless of how mature and responsible they seem, are still only babies. If you can't leave them home alone at that age, then they don't need a cell phone. You're the parent. You should be with your child as much as possible. If you're not there, there should be a responsible adult around. Get the kid a medical bracelet and an epipen. These save more lives than a cell phone that drops the call and can only be triangulated within one block. That would still leave a lot of ground for an EMT to cover to find a downed kid.

6 months ago, I would have been appalled at the thought....but, I have a 7 year old and we got him a cell phone....one that only calls a few numbers, so that he can call us. He is at the age that he is starting to spend time at other people's houses, and this way he never has to worry about the phone or asking permission. If he needs me to come and get him, he doesn't have to worry, he can just call me.

A friend's son (who is 8 by the way) got lost on his bike in a strange neighborhood. He couldn't get back to something he knew and started to panic. A friend who was with him had a cell phone and called his mom. She got both kids home without much fanfare.

For the peace of mind, it is well worth it. Would it give you piece of mind?

No.
If the child has severe allergies, they're gonna be down for the count before they could grab their cellphone and call for help.

And how often do you let your 6 or 7 year old out without some supervision or at least a playmate?
When I was 6 or 7 there was always someone's parent around watching us kids play. They would walk us home if need be, too.

In the event of an emergency someone was always around.

If you dont mind buying another one each and every time he loses it. But there is a phone at Target and I think Radio Shack that you can buy that will program only certain numbers in the phone. If the child has severe allergies, then have an id card made and have him carry it everywhere he goes with this important information.

If the child is 6/7, then they should be with adults 24/7 anyway, why would they need a cell phone? I swear this society has become so technology needy it's scary. Next they'll have cell phones for infants.

There is some sort of cell phone that is made for kids that doesn't have the ability to dial numbers. It only has 2 or 3 programmed numbers that can be called by pressing a single button. I can't remember where I've seen it, but it may have been in a Scholastic book order. Search the scholastic web site if you're interested in it.

A 6 or 7 year old should not get a cell phone becuz they are not that responsible yet. Also they won't have much to talk about anyways.I'm 12 and I don't even know what to talk about on my cell phone and my twin lost her cell phone 4 days after she got it so that is why I think that 6 and 7 year olds should not get a cell phone until they are a teen.

NO!
If the child has severe allergies, then any adults nearby will know to call an ambulance.
6-7 years old is too young for a mobile phone.
