Cat's of all ages will purr when they are relaxed and content. When your Zoe meows she either want's something or she is being submissive and want's attention, or food!

She wants picking up and cuddling if she's a kitten. She's missing her mum and wants love a cuddles. She's purring cos she likes it and is showing affection. I have a ginger kitten about 12 weeks old and he's always jumping on my knee for cuddles and then falls asleep for about an hour.

The cat likes you. Try to tickle it just below the mouth for it to purr more.

Cats realise that we communicate verbally. Your kitten is responding to your talking. Cats purr for two reasons..............when contented but also when in need of comfort.

Short answer is you can only hear her when you pick her up.

Also Cats purr to show contentment maybe she's only content while being held.

No doubt you speak to her in your language there`s a strong possibility here that cats actually understand the French tongue? not as stupid as some may think cos our cat didn`t understand english even though he was born here.

Purring is a sign of submission so she either loves and trusts you or is very scared!! I assume she's trusting you! LOL
