Christianity does not suppress women, the bible talk about several women, who were leaders, apostles, disciples, teachers, warriors, and judges. Women are only held down if they don't know the truth.

Because of politcal correctness regarding who's actually doing it, and sympathy of liberals for who's actually doing.
It's a case of liberals (the politically correct forces) being caught between a rock and a hard spot.
