I'm posting this here because I'm hoping some outdoorsy guy with the same tastes as my husband will answer...

I want to buy my husband a watch for Christmas, but he's so picky and I don't know what guys really like. O_o
All I know is it should be analogue, and have multiple faces (like, world & 24 hour clocks, etc. within the watch face).
But I know he'd really love one with lots of other gadgets besides. What other gadgets are out there for watches? Are there ones with compasses or GPS features? And where could I find them??
He loves running and cycling, so any with cool features that would be good for outdoorsy-types would be great... He also loves travelling, so anything related to that would be good too...
Gah. U_U If anyone can tell me of a good watch like this, or give a link or a picture, or where to buy one... I would love it so much. U_U

Thank you!!

:)

He's outdoorsy and you want a watch with a lot of features? See if there is an REI in your area www.rei.com click on store locations. The sales staff is helpful, not on commission, and they have GPS watches, heat rate monitors, chronographs, etc. If not in your area, then look at their on-line catalog. The other good outlet would be www.westmarine.com, especially for waterproof, bordering on scuba diving stuff. They are a very good, national chain of marine supply stores. Both those outlets have competetive prices. You might find it for $5 less, but likely not. After a lot of experience with both, if they have it, I'll get it from them becuase their prices are good and the service is great.

Specific features:

I liked a altimeter watch that tracked vertical feet I hiked or skiied in a day and the rate of climb in feet/minute.

GPS I have been leary of. You can get such cool GPS in a 5"x2"x1" package now, moving map and all. GPS on a watch would be hard to see and push the button in comparions.

If he is into running and cycling, the heart rate monitors would be fun to pay with. They'll report his pulse, help him get into a target zone for exercise and some even track his progress and recovery rate.

For multiple time zones, I've always preferred one with a analog face for home time and a little digital window for local time. The digital window also lets you set the alarm, use a stopwatch function, etc. Casio has been making those for years, some formal, some sport-style. About $80.

A Rolex is very nice but they are VERY expensive to maintain (a cleaning every few years is over $500). I have a Breitling that I have had for 10 years. It's less expensive to buy and maintain than a Rolex, they are analog, and they have just as good of a reputation as Rolex. The company is also synonymous with avionics. I have actually had WWII pilots see my watch and tell me that they used Breitlings themselves to keep time on missions. What kind of guy would not want that!!!!

as you said he is outdoorsy and he loves running and cycling, he would be to a near Triathlete, I prefer brands like Timex and Polar as they have functions of cycling and running in it, some of these watches are so complex with all its software and programs in it, its like buying a computer, but need not worry here are some sites i recommend for your hubby, these watches are great and very sporty! instantly people would know he is a sportsman. I am personally using the polarS625X, its really a computer hooked up on your wrist and also the bike. Hope you get what you wanted. Cheers

go to
http://www.polarusa.com

also try
http://www.timex.com/bin/catalog.tmx?key=m_outdoor&ppn=no

but if budget is restrained try a casio Gshock

If your hubby is the "outdoorsey" type, then it's likely a Rolex isn't for him, I mean it needs to be practical, not metallic shiney, (if he's ever in the water or fishing).. and if he's anything like my man, all that glitter and flashiness isn't necessary. You're probably putting more effort into this gift idea, then he ever would.

You can always try good ol'e Walmart, or Dick's Sporting Goods, if you have if in your location. If you are looking for the GPS, or something with more features, try www.bassmasters.com, or www.cabelaoutdoors.com.. I hope the Cabela's link is correct, I'd have to dig under his bathroom sink to find the old magazines, but do a yahoo search with that name.

Good luck~

What is your price range? Don'y worry about excessive gadgets. Just get him a masculine brushed stainless steel dive watch. If you dont want to spend alot, try the Swiss Army brand watches. For a little more, a Tag is nice. The ultimate rugged watch is the Omega. (Rolex's are for little boys that need to compensate for something)

Any competent answer will have to be based on the price range you have. There's a lot of bad-a*s watches, but they cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. I have 9 watches including 3 Rolexes, Cartier, Hilfiger, TAG Hauer, Elgin, Fossil and something else. I like and wear the TAG the most. You're looking for a Chronograph style watch. Does he already have a watch that he likes or is it just any ol' thang? Always buy quality. Titanium watches are very light weight and durable.

Timex makes some great watches under their "Tiimex Expedition" line. I had one which looked really cool: rustic brown color, analog, tough looking strap, with most of the features you are loking for. Prices are all over the map: around $30-80, depending on features.
