I do my kids allowance based on their age, and then set standards for getting it and then bonuses for extra stuff.
My daughters are 10 & 12, so they get 10 and 12 dollars respectively a week, but the qualifier is that their weekly chores and homework have to be done everyday. If they get grounded, allowance gets pulled too. Then I award extra dollars for extra stuff, like A's on report cards, or extra cleaning around the house. I think it's important that they understand that I am going to support them, but they have to earn it too.

As a Single Mom (with now adult Disabled Children and a DEADBEAT DAD), and given that I provided for ALL of their needs -- their clothes, their food, their school supplies, their shelter, the utilities they used, their activities, the athletic gear, etc etc etc ---
MY take on this is given that I was doing all this -- the children SHOULD be doing their chores and doing their Homework on a daily basis. IF they got As on the report card -- then a bit of money is appropriate -- to purchase a little something for themselves (like a new video game).
Other than that -- any sort of allowance is unrealistic when they are getting everything from a parent -- they need to learn to VOLUNTARILY contribute to the WELFARE of the ENTIRE Family -- even if it is JUST MOM and the Children.

It depends on 1) how old they are 2) what they are expected to buy with their allowance money 3) what they receive from you other than allowance money. Reward them for doing well and impress upon them that money has to be earned. You will do them a big favour.

It all depends on the chores. No more then a couple dollars. Alot of times they end up with more money anyway. Also the age has alot to due with it. The younger they are the less they get until they can learn the value of money.

depends on age, responsibilities, attitude and responsibility. 1st grade, it was only 50 cents. every three weeks would get me a comic book.
I had 3-5 dollars depending on whether I mowed the lawn or shoveled the snow.
But then it was upped to 5 (nonchore, grade school ), however that was budgeted towards other things as well (school lunch food, gifts for other people, etc. where only maybe a dollar or so would actually be free spending money).

Depends how much the parents can afford to give to the child, I never got allowance as a kid. I worked for my money as a kid which sterms into adult hood. If the kid deserves it gets it but if the kid being right pain in one *** then they being looking forward to boot camp.

My eldest DD is 13yrs old and she gets £10 a month and for that she has to do chores.
She also gets a clothing allowance of £20 a month and with that she has to buy her latest crazy fashions....we buy all her normal clothes but it is expected that if she has to have the 'latest boots' or whatever, she has to save for em and buy them!
Youngest children are 21months and 5 months so obviously they dont get money but we buy them a treat every couple of months!

In England,"pocket money" means just that-the change,or excess money in your pocket at the end of a day.(just make sure it's not wads or bankrolls!!)Whether this "change" has to be earned or not is a moot point-the whole idea of pocket money as we know it now has gotten so out of hand that it is now a budgetary demand, part of the family weekly, monthly or yearly budget to be accounted for.As for chores,i prefer not to think of them as that, but rather "training" for the life kids will lead when they eventually leave home and set up on their own-you are giving them the tools, skills and your experience for them to cope in "the world"-to me that is priceless.

I think that whatever they get, half should be banked and the other half spent in their own way. Depending on the chores and age I think $10 a week is reasonable.
